They’d only been gone for less than an hour, but Keith thought it was taking forever. Despite Conrad’s jovial disposition, it was getting later than he had planned, even with the extra time of not taking toll roads, and he was just wanting to get back on the highway and headed for home. Conrad, though, seemed to have an endless wellspring of energy. “We should be coming up on your car anytime, kid,” he exclaimed. “Just around this bend.” He slowed the rumbling truck down in anticipation of spotting the SUV, but even he gasped when his attention was drawn to the scene along the side of the road. There were maybe a half dozen people gathered around the SUV, with Brian and Susan crouching together on the roof, and Brian swinging a softball bat anytime one of them tried to reach over the edge.
“Mary mother Joseph,” Conrad muttered. “I never believed the stories until now.”
“What stories?” Keith asked, his voice rising to a panic.
Conrad reached behind his seat, to where his sword was sheathed. “Frigging Amish Zombies, boy.” He pulled the sheath away and let the truck inch closer to the frightened Brian and Susan and their undead attackers. “It’s time to slice some zombie heads.” Conrad leapt from the truck, sword extended. Keith could only watch as the big man started roaring, swinging, catching the staggering figures at the neck and making their heads fly into the air. He could also see Brain and Susan, huddling in shock as Conrad’s sword made short work of the six figures that had been trying to reach them from the sides of the SUV.
