Passings: Amy Winehouse

Troubled, Grammy-winning singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead in her North London home, Sky News is reporting. The Daily Mail reports that police have confirmed the passing.

In a statement, the London Metropolitan Police said, "Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased. On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained."

A suspected drug overdose took the life of the singer, Nick Buckley of the Sunday Mirror tweeted. She's battled drug addiction for years, having most recently checked back into rehabilitation in May. Winehouse entered treatment in late 2007 for drug problems, including admitted heroin use.

Earlier in the day, Tim Gatt of Sky News tweeted a statement from her manager saying that she was canceling upcoming performances, writing, "Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances. Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen."

This was the news I woke up to today and it made me very sad. She had such a phenomenal voice and I truly thought (hoped) that she would get a handle on her addictions and prove that she was a long haul talent, alas, it just wasn't meant to be. *sigh* Addiction is a horrible thing, I want to quit smoking and I know how hard that has been when I try and quit, so I can't even begin to imagine how hard heroin would be to kick. Ever since I was 13 and read the book "H" (that they made into a movie that I'm blanking on the title of but David Bowie did the music) I knew that I would have to avoid heroin at all costs. I have an extremely addictive nature, just like when I tried crystal back in the 80's. Once was enough, I knew that if I used it more I would SO easily have become hooked.

She will be remembered though, hopefully more for her talent than for her drug induced actions that gave the tabloids so much fodder.

That's been a train wreck in slow-motion for years. I'm sorry others valued her life and her talents far more than she did.

FWIW, I was not only not surprised, I pretty much figured it was just a matter of time. I'm far more surprised that Keith Richards and Courtney Love are still living than Amy Winehouse's passing. Still, I do find it sad.
